This 30” x 56” museum-quality diorama and replica surfboard collection was personally commissioned by Fernando in tribute to the world famous Windansea surf break and the shapers and surfers who made it so. The piece is the largest sculptural diorama ever made by master modeler Malcolm Wilson and features miniature versions of Bob Simmons, Skip Frye and Woody Brown in the lineup along with nine model surfboard replicas including a Simmons Spoon, Hynson Red Fin and Carl Eckstrom asymmetrical – similar to the special Liquid Nation Ball board being auctioned off tonight! Each board was handcrafted and painted using the same materials as the full-size originals.

For the last seven years, it has been tradition to have a legendary shaper custom shape a board for Liquid Nation Ball for all the celebrities, pro surfers and industry legends to sign upon arrival. The one-of-a kind board is then auctioned off in the evening’s live auction. This year, Liquid Nation Ball is proud to feature a custom shaped board from legendary master shaper Carl Ekstrom – a La Jolla native and an original Windansea local. Carl started shaping in the early 60s for legends such as Jacobs, Bing, and Con before opening his own shop with Al Nelson in 1963. Carl developed the first asymmetrical tail design in 1965, based on the idea that the board would better match the surfers own nonlinear stance. Carl's unique design influence can be found in restaurants, military training helmets, Reebok shoes and beyond. His asymmetrical surfboard is enjoying a resurgence with La Jolla surfer Richard Kenvin and the Hydrodynamica crew helping Carl with R&D in and around San Diego environs.
The board to be auctioned off is classic Ekstrom - a 8’0” asymmetrical shape with asymmetrically placed fins as well. The board features a custom metallic silver paint with red scripted Carl Ekstrom logo that is finished in an automotive acrylic polyurethane. Personally commissioned by Fernando Aguerre for Liquid Nation Ball, this truly is a one-of-a-kind surfboard shaped by a La Jolla native and master shaper!
