SIMA presents
Sustainable Boot Camp

The deadline to register is June 24, 2013. There will be no refunds after June 24, 2013.

Sustainability and green products have infiltrated mainstream America, often becoming fast-fading trends and marketing tactics when faced with challenging financial times. However, as an industry closely tied to the health of the environment, the surf industry has long embraced environmentalism and sustainability in a variety of ways. Join us as we take a look at how sustainability practices can further be built into a company’s bottom line, as well as learn more about important new environmental regulations affecting board builders in the state of California.

Breakout Session 1: Apparel & Footwear
Positive Impact: Fostering a Common Approach To Measuring Product Sustainability
Speaker: Jason Kibbey / Executive Director, Sustainable Apparel Coalition

The Sustainable Apparel Coalition was founded by a group of sustainability leaders from global apparel and footwear companies who recognize that addressing our industry’s current social and environmental challenges are both a business imperative and an opportunity.

The Coalition seeks to lead the industry toward a shared vision of sustainability built upon a common approach for measuring and evaluating apparel and footwear product sustainability performance that will spotlight priorities for action and opportunities for technological innovation. Join us as the Coalition’s executive director, Jason Kibbey, walks the surf industry through the development and purpose of the Higg Index as a tool we can all use for measuring the environmental and social performance of apparel, footwear and other related products.

Breakout Session 2: Board Builder
What's Inside A Board? Sustainability, Liability & Profitability
Speakers: Cordon Baesel & Stefanie Warren / McKenna Long & Aldridge

Consumer products, including surfboards and related hard goods, are subject to increasing regulatory scrutiny. Evolving product requirements are affecting all aspects of manufacturing. From consideration of raw materials and product lifecycle impacts, to workplace safety and consequences from consumer use, companies must assess their products in great detail. With a push from market forces (i.e., consumer empowerment), manufacturers need to know and provide detailed facts about their products. Cordon Baesel and Stefanie Warren of McKenna Long & Aldridge will discuss California's "Green Chemistry" requirements and the increasing focus on safety and disclosure throughout the product lifecycle for surfboards and other consumer goods. This presentation will identify emerging product composition and disclosure requirements for board-builders, and how their continuing innovations can promote sustainability, reduce liability and (hopefully) increase hard good profitability.

Are Sustainable Surfboards Ready for Prime Time?
Speakers: Michael Stewart & Kevin Whilden / Founders, Sustainable Surf

Join the founders of Sustainable Surf as they discuss the newest technology to make an environmentally friendly surfboard with no drawbacks in terms of surfing or shaping performance. They will also describe the rapidly growing public demand for a sustainable surfboard and help surfboard builders develop marketing and sales strategies to capture new customers. Many major surfboard brands are now making "ecoboards" and the trend will continue to grow.
